On Wednesday January 23, West High Varsity boys soccer team won 3-0 against Saint Mary’s. West dominated Saint Mary’s and got their first win in a league game for the season. Sophomore Rasheed Samady says that he prepares for a game by “listening to my favorite artist and clearing my mind to visualize how I am going to play.” Minutes into the first half, both teams got a yellow card for bodying each other. Towards the end of the first half, junior Saul Salgado assisted senior Christian Neves in a goal. This ended the first half of the game with West in the lead by one point. In the beginning of the second half, Salgado scored a goal on an assist from sophomore Jesus Peña. Halfway into the second half, Neves scored another goal from a rebound off of a shot from senior Uriel Perez, which resulted in the final score being 3-0.

After winning the game, head coach Jesus Reyes said that prior to the game he was hoping for a “better passing game with a little bit more chemistry, and I think they did that tonight.” Reflecting back on the game, Reyes believes that the team “needs to work on our communication and on our positioning.” When asked what the team could do to improve after tonight’s game, Neves responded by saying, “more communication, working harder off the ball and taking more attacking chances.” Pena says that the boys can improve by “training and working as a team.” Overall it was a great game for the boys that was full of enthusiasm and celebration after their win.
