In today’s interconnected world, the ability to communicate in multiple languages is a needed skill. It gives us cultural understanding, abilities, and opens a world of opportunities. However, West High only offers a limited option of language classes. This means that students will not be prepared enough for their future. It is time for West High to recognize the need for a larger range of language classes so students can succeed.
According to West High’s Language Chair, Dr. Pina, every student who earns the seal of biliteracy is fluent enough. She states, “43 students have passed the AP exam, and 20 percent of those students were nonnative speakers” Ms. Expresses how students would be prepared for the future ahead of them. She later says, “Lack of teachers, lack of language teachers.” She states we have very few teachers who can teach these students all other languages. She adds that these few teachers would teach but how many students would want to
Although it may seem like an advantage, it is more of a necessity. Having only three language options narrows down the opportunities our students could have in the coming times. Nowadays we have more ways to expand industries globally. By introducing additional classes at West High, we will help our students have more chances of getting into their dream careers.
If West High School offered more language classes, students would be able to communicate better. This would
open many doors into the world of culture. Students would be able to understand one another more inside and outside of school. Students who learn languages beyond English, Spanish, and French are more likely to develop an expanded perspective on the world and a would appreciate cultures even more.
In addition to that students can get excited to come to school! Having more language options could motivate students in many ways. Students will be thrilled to show up to school and learn about their favorite subject.
Some may say that having more classes would cost more money and would be a waste. But it is an investment for our students’ future. Schools in general should be prioritizing their student’s education over anything else.
In conclusion, West High School needs to recognize the urgent need for more language courses. The lack of options we have now may affect student’s opportunities to get into a dream career or a better way of learning. Students would be prepared for the complex world ahead of them. It is time to invest in our students’ future by offering more language education. This will benefit everyone as it can strengthen and unite our community.
