There are plenty of sports to choose from at West High. There’s basketball, football, baseball/softball, water polo, wrestling, and many more. However, one of the sports that seems to be overshadowed here at our school is track and field. Students may assume that track and field is just about running even though it’s so much more than that. When speaking to West High’s track and field team, all of them shared their passion and enthusiasm for the sport.
I spoke to Senior Delmy Alvarez and asked her what track meant to her. “To me, track is so much more than just running, jumping, and long practices,” she replies passionately. “It’s honestly my favorite sport because it’s all about improving yourself. You’re constantly working to beat yourself; your own times, your own marks, and trying to be the best you can be.” I also asked her what she’s excited about this upcoming season. “For this upcoming season, I’m excited to be able to run and jump one last time and try out some new events. I’m also really happy about being with some of my closest friends and surrounded by such a positive energy for the last few months of school!”
Senior Jazeline Ayo shared similar sentiments when also asked about what track meant to her. “Track has always been apart of my life, and it’s really shaped my way of thinking on and off the field,” she responds. “Track is honestly a lifestyle, it’s not just a sport that takes two hours of my day. It’s taught me that the only way to get things you want is if you work hard and have discipline. To me, track and field is definitely a sport that not only has benefited my physical health but my mental health as well.”
Some people on the team are excited about working harder. “I’m excited to apply everything I learned last year and work for it even harder,” Senior Samuel Anderson says when asked about what he’s excited for the upcoming season. “I want to hit a new PR in all events and finally be in a wolf pack relay.”
It’s obvious that our track & field has a lot of devotion to the sport. Just like other student athletes at West High, they work hard to better themselves while also having fun!
