On the last home game of the season, I decided to talk to some players, coaches, and parents about their opinion whether JV sports (football especially) is underrated.
The first person I interviewed was Senior Logan Pedro on the varsity team. Logan has been playing football for the last two years here at West and in his opinion, he thinks we should “put some respect on their name” because “for the last however many years, JV hasn’t even won a game, and now look at them.”
Next, I interviewed Sophomore Donald Cellars safety wide receiver for the Lincoln Trojans JV team. Don has been playing football for around 5 years. He said, “JV should be underrated in a way because you’re just starting to get a grip on football, and you should be able to learn from Varsity and look forward to getting better at football.”
I also talked to Armani Smith the running back and linebacker for the Frosh (freshman) team at Lincoln High. For those unaware, a frosh team is the team right before JV. Armani says that “JV is certainly underrated.” He goes on to say that even the Frosh team gets a bigger crowd than JV, and even at away games there are still more people in the stands at Frosh than JV.
Finally, I spoke to Junior Jamani Hampton running back for Varsity here at West. He sees that there are not that many people in the stands during JV games. He states that “there’s a difference in skill level but I think they deserve a bit more love.”
So, we have some mixed opinions about this subject. But the one thing I can say is, JV we appreciate you and cannot wait for the next season to roll around. Personally, I think JV should be appreciated a bit more than they are, especially because they don’t even have a cheer team. So, I can’t wait for next year to see how we as students can start supporting each other better!
