Littering just like everywhere else is a prominent issue at West High. Just by walking around campus, you could spot at least five pieces of trash scattered around. This is an issue that our school and many other high schools have always faced.
A simple solution is to just throw your trash away. Although this is the easiest solution, it is not a very realistic solution since all students must participate in it. Due to there being no real consequence, this is the best staff can hope for.
Since there is no real consequence, is there a reward? The answer is yes. Sort of. After an interview with our principal Mr. Henderson, he stated that seniors with lots of Saturday school hours are offered trash pickup during lunch to knock out some of their hours. This is a good trade off since the school gets cleaned up and seniors can clear up their Saturday school hours to graduate.
After asking students why they believe their fellow classmates don’t pick up and throw away their trash, the majority ended up stating that it’s just “because they are lazy”. This explains why the majority of people litter, as they don’t want to waste the little time it takes to throw their trash away.
