There have been a lot of clubs throughout the years. A total of 35 clubs. There are a lot of different varieties for every student at Merrill West High. One club is Black Student Union. BSU clubs often host events to celebrate Black culture and history and discuss issues affecting the African American community. Senior Daniella Pierre, president of BSU states “I think a lot of students feel like they don’t have a voice, BSU gives people a way to speak.” She stated, “we can see the differences in our students, we can see the work we apply in meetings actually getting applied.”
Another club is Christian Club. Christian club is a club where you study the Bible and build community. This club provides fellowship and spiritual support for other Christians as well as reaching out to deliver God’s message. This club will allow you to worship God through song, prayer and the study of his word. Senior Roderick Coladilla, member of Christian club states, “We bring positivity from the teachings and share it to the whole school, we make sure our peers know that they are loved and known.” This would be a great club to think about joining if you want to get more in touch with God or even if you just want something positive in your life. “The Christian club definitely makes an impact, it helps students challenge their emotions, become more self-aware, and helps people find their inner self” Roderick explained.
Another club you might be interested in is MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztalan). MEChA is a student organization that promotes higher education, culture, and history. This is a good club to join if you strive to demand respect for human dignity and justice from all members of society. Senior Michael Garcia president of MEChA states, “we provide opportunity to meet people and try to be included at our school and show a good example.” He also mentions “the club has had its ups and downs but has grown a lot more, bigger in size and pretty known outside of school.” This club would be good for you if you want to learn more about the Mexican culture and get more involved in the culture.
There are a lot of other clubs that you may be interested in as well. We encourage students to get out there and try new things.
