Epic the musical is a musical concept of the book “The Odyssey” where the main character Odysseus (King of Ithica) goes through challenges with the crew he led fighting monsters, Gods, Prophets, Suitors, and eventually his own men, so he could find his way back home to his wife and son.
Epic the Musial, being created from the book “The Odyssey”, is quite different from how the story was told. In the beginning of the book “The Odyssey”, the story was told from the point of view of Antinous, then after a while transitioned into Odysseys’, but the only point of view from Epic the Musical was from Odysseus, and that is just one of the many differences between the two.
Comparing the book to the musical, freshmen, Clair Caguiat says, “In my opinion, Epic the Musical is better than the book.” She also goes into what she would do differently in Odysseus’ position, saying “If I could change anything, it would be to hide the wind bag from the crew, because that is what set them so far back, making it take even longer to get home.”
Senior, Karina Mendoza, who loves both “The Odyssey” and Epic the Musical, says “I prefer Epic the Musical more because the book is a little more graphic, and I want to live in blissful ignorance to the fact of what happened in the book that Jorge Rivera-Herrans (the creator of Epic the Musical) sensors. Telling us what she believes the main purpose of Odysseus’ journey was, says “It was a journey to test his faith, morals, and loyalty, but overall, just trials that were meant to motivate him along the way.” Lastly she also believes the downfall of his men were justified, saying “Looking more into Epic the Musical, when it came between choosing between his wife (Penelope) or his brother in law and second man (Eurylochus), everything leading up to that very moment trying to get home would have all been for nothing if he would have chosen the crew, when the whole purpose of the journey in the first place was to get home to Penelope and Telemachus.”
Overall, being a fan myself, I also believe that Epic the Musical is better than the book “The Odyssey.” I appreciate the skill and well thought out manner of the musical. I think it is one of the best musicals I’ve ever heard so far.
