At this years Super Bowl Kendrick Lamar and SZA performed. Looking at predictions versus the performance itself, I can see a lot of similarities.
I believe it’s safe to say Kendrick and SZA are an iconic duo in the music industry right now because of how popular Lamar’s new album is, featuring SZA. Not to mention all the publicity SZA’s new album has received recently as well.
Junior Gonzalo Inguanzo mentioned that there’s an invigorating aspect behind the performance. He said he’s hoping to see songs like “Gloria”, “Luther”, and “Doves in the wind.” He said “I think it’ll be an enjoyable performance compared to the last few years because of how popular he is. Especially after the drama with Drake, and recent music drop.” After the performance Inguanzo said “I wish SZA had a little more time on stage.”
Another opinion was given by senior Alicia Mora Lopez, who assisted with replicating the 2024 Super Bowl performance for West High’s Multicultural Rally last year. She said “[Kendrick] has a stage presence, but I am hoping to see more of a performance. Like dancers and something entertaining.”
Following up, Mora gave her opinions of the show. She said, “Honestly I found it all to be pretty predictable, it was still a great performance, but nothing really shocked me.” She continued, “I think his stage presence was great. The background dancers didn’t take away from his presence.”
Then junior Keira Hawthorn said “As a performer, I feel like the recording of the show didn’t really capture as much as the excitement the live show had. I think that’s also a reason people might not have liked the halftime show as much.”
Lamar uses symbolism throughout his performance that has received a wide range of responses online. He took time to focus on the meaning of his performance which not every performer does. For that, I would say he did well.
