During Spring Break, Boys and Girls Club hosted a volleyball camp accessible to high school and middle school members. The camp lasted from March 10th to March 14th and gave attendees the chance to practice their skills even while on vacation. Members were taught the fundamentals of volleyball which include passing, setting, and hitting.
BGC has hosted multiple volleyball camps throughout the year. When interviewed about her motivations for running the camps, West Unit Director Miriam Castro said, “I want to teach young people how to grow their skills in volleyball and encourage everyone to have fun. I’m passionate, and I want to grow other people’s passions.” She hopes that members will take the opportunity to participate in the sport they love, regardless of age and experience.
Sophomore Parmeet Poni likes to frequent these camps and finds them helpful in growing her skill. She gave a detailed description of a typical session by stating, “We do warmups, stretches, passing drills, hitting and serving drills, and after we get into teams with high schoolers as team captains. We play a tournament and whoever wins becomes champion.” Poni added that she would recommend this camp to those who want to play volleyball because of its welcoming atmosphere.
Sophomore Jocelyn Benitez also provided her own experience attending the camps. She said, “We learn, set, serve, and communicate with our teammates and really get our feet moving on court, we also do many tournaments. I love making new friends at BGC.” Benitez expressed her appreciation for the staff members as they teach kids their fundamentals in an effective manner. “Coach Miriam teaches us very well on how to play better and gets us to practice every skill there is to learn about volleyball. The staff did a lot for us and participated.”
At the end of the volleyball camp, participants left with an overall satisfied experience. BGC plans to hold more camps in the future. Information can be found in the club room after school or on the West High BGC Instagram page.
