New red-light cameras have been added on traffic lights at intersections all around Tracy. This new program was implemented on the 21st of February, with more cameras being planned on being added at more intersections in the city soon. The City of Tracy collaborated with Verra Mobility, known for their safety transportation technology, to administer the program.
According to the official Tracy Police Department website, this program would help drivers obey traffic laws more and promote safety on the roads. This program was implemented to reduce the number of collisions, especially the ones that could potentially lead to serious injuries or even death.
The intersections would be equipped with high-resolution cameras, with sensors that are activated when the light is red and could detect when a vehicle runs a red light. The camera would then take a photo of that vehicle, including its license plate and its driver and will be reviewed by the department before issuing a citation. Drivers who are caught will receive a notice from the San Joaquin Superior Court with the fine amount due.
Students give their view on the newly implemented program and share what they think about it.
“I like the idea of the cameras.” says Junior Jayden Lam “I do think it could improve traffic safety. If people follow the rules not as many accidents will happen.”
Sophomore Danna Aguilar Lopez also gives her thoughts on the program, “Honestly, I wasn’t that shocked, but I did question why we needed them. I feel like Tracy is a pretty safe and quiet place. The cameras are very useful though!”
However, some students don’t find the program effective.
Junior Landon Saechao shares his own experience encountering one of the cameras, “I think the red-light cameras are kind of distracting and gimmicky. I remember when my mom and I were going somewhere, and they triggered with nobody even running a red light. It gave an unpleasant flash and could probably make things worse.” He then shares what he thinks of the program, “I don’t think that they change anything because the cameras won’t necessarily stop people from running red lights.”
As of now, the cameras may still have its flaws, but it shows that people are working together towards making Tracy safer for everyone. More details about the Red-Light Safety Program can be found on the official Tracy Police Department website.
