How many times have you had to cancel plans to finish homework or cram for an exam? I have continuously canceled my plans due to my extensive coursework. However, as a past homeschooled student who is re-entering into the public-school scene, I was interested in other’s perspectives regarding this subject.
The first person I talked to was freshman, Raegan Salazar. Sala has been a public-school student her whole life and has moved schools several times. She says she receives a lot of homework regularly, especially in English and Spanish. I asked her if she has ever had to cancel plans because of homework or studying and she replied “Yes, and pretty recently too.” She states it has become a lot more difficult to find time with friends and even family, mostly because of schedule conflicts and homework buildup. She stated that all the homework she has causes her to have a “lack in social connection.”
Next, I interviewed freshman Millie Harmison. She mentions she gets the most homework in Math and English. She says it’s difficult to make plans with friends because teachers may not warn you of the homework, so you must check Teams regularly. She says she has had to cancel plans for exams before and recently as well. She wishes she could go out with friends more often; however, she is thankful for school because without it we would be lost and confused in every aspect of life. But she says sadly, there seems to be no point in having many friends because you can’t even make plans or hang out with them.
Last, I interviewed Dr. Stagnaro, one of our assistant principals. Growing up, Stagnaro says he consistently received a considerable amount of homework regularly, around 3-5 hours a night. He noted his upbringing in a strict home, so school and sports were a priority before friends. Going out during the week was never an occurrence. He says the best way to juggle a social life and academic career is to make a schedule and prioritize. He noted that a social life will “always be there” and that you should take this time to work hard and take advantage of the education we are given.
Sometimes school is difficult, I will say that. In some cases, it’s worth it. I wouldn’t have the friends I have today without school. It’s hard to make room for everyone I love when have a plethora of homework. But nonetheless I am grateful for the little moments with friends and family.
