Even though it’s a lot of hard work to earn, the seal is worth it for many reasons. I talked to Dr. Piña one of the teachers who runs the program and asked her what opportunities the seal of biliteracy opens doors; she commented, “Knowing multiple languages opens up a lot of doors, so you’re more marketable… students that are bilingual positions offer extra money to speak to different groups of people.” This demonstrates that the award is more than a seal because it opens up many possibilities in the work force.
Then I discussed with West High Senior Miranda Montoya Torres, I asked why she decided to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, she said, “I did it so looked good on college applications” Then I asked how the Seal of Biliteracy represents her identity and culture, she replied, “It shows that I’m Latina and shows I know how to speak Spanish through and through and overall shows I am Mexican.”
The Seal of Biliteracy is a great source for opportunities in your college and work career. Even though it is difficult to achieve, it is worth every hour spent working through it. It also represents your identity, and your roots.
Any student should try to achieve the goal of a Seal if they are interested to look more unique as a student.
