Celebrating seniors’ athleticism is common amongst the world of scholarships. Most students tend to stick with a sport for a long time, especially those who commit to colleges based on said sport. Now that graduation is around the corner, many athletes here at school are facing the question of whether they will continue to pursue their passion for their sport in the future.
Senior Malia Morreira, who is currently on the varsity softball team, was offered a scholarship to play for San Franscisco State University. I asked about her journey with this sport and her high school career in general. She said, “I’ve been playing softball for 11 years now; now that I am going off to play for the next level I am really excited and to create new bonds with other girls.
When asking her who she is grateful for that helped her through this journey, she replies, “I am grateful for my parents a lot because they sacrificed so much for me to get where I am, and they continued to, as well as supporting me through my struggles and reassuring me when I am down. And shout out to my siblings for always supporting me and being by my side and giving me wise words”. Lastly, I asked her what she plans to major in when going on to college, she says “I plan on majoring in sonography”.
The next Athlete I interviewed was Senior Jonathan Hupman who is currently on Track & Field and was offered a scholarship to play for Stanislaus State University. I asked him also about his journey with this sport. He said, “I’ve been on Track & Field for four years and cross country for three years. He also says, “I am looking forward to it, and I am just excited to meet new people”. Lastly, he says “I am grateful for my mom, coach TJ, my friends and family that helped me through this journey”.
Now that the time is coming closer for these two athletes to go on with this amazing journey, they will forever leave a big impact on West High sports.
