West High’s upcoming multicultural rally is set to take place Friday, April 25th in the main gym. The rally was made to take cultures and traditions throughout the world and bring them right here to our campus to celebrate. At the rally you should expect unforgettable and high energy performances from numerous clubs on campus. The performance lineup includes, West High’s Black Student Union, Latinx, M.E.C.H.A, K-pop Club, Royal G, Bhangra Club, and Folklorico!
The multicultural rally will involve many traditional dances but also add a modern twist. I asked junior, Jesus Magaña who is preforming with both Latinx and M.E.C.H.A., “What are you most excited to see at the Multicultural Rally?” He responded, “Personally I am excited to see MECHA and Latinx’s collaboration performance as we have never seen anything like it before. Additionally, seeing what other cultural clubs have in store is definitely exciting.”
Magaña then explains the cultural significance and inspiration in his group’s performance with, “Because of Latinx’s large culture expanse, it contains many cultural significances and inspirations, two of which we have decided to perform. Huapango and Quebradita both originate from a family of Mexican dancing styles, both of which require fast pace and acrobatic movement. These songs have a value because they are typical party songs found at any function, which many people tend to enjoy.”
I lastly wanted to know why Magaña felt it was important to have these multicultural rallies for the school. He responds with, “I believe these multicultural rallies are a great way to demonstrate variety of cultures within our community, it stands as a way to not only foster but help expand these cultures for all to share.”
Overall, Multicultural rallies are a great way to spread awareness of the diversity of our campus through songs, dances, and games. So, be ready to cheer, sing, and dance in your seat!
