The season is underway

This 2015 Girls Varsity Soccer team is excited for this season. West High is in a new and much more competitive league this year. The girls, believing they have the best team in the last four years, are ready for the challenge. With their past record, not to mention losing two starters to injury, the Wolf Pack is an underdog in this new league. Going undefeated in preseason, the team has high hopes entering the season.

“We should surprise a lot of teams this year,” Head Coach Abel Dorado says. “I know it’s a tough league and a lot of teams just think it will be an easy win, but I think we will do alright.”

In the first two games of the season against the best teams in the league, St. Mary’s and Lincoln, West showed them it wouldn’t be an ‘easy win’ scoring the first goals. This league is different in that West will play each team three times extending to a total of 15 games rather than 10.

“The most important element to reaching success for our varsity team would be everyone staying healthy and injury free,” Senior four year player Amanda Beck says. The team lost two starters to injury, Pakeeza Azizpor (torn ACL) and Jenna Nguyen (broken ankle). Also, Sandy Barbosa who tore her ACL during basketball season in the winter was supposed to be playing but will hopefully be returning midseason.

“This year’s varsity team is different from the previous years because we all work well together and there are no cliques, ‘we are one big family,’” Beck says.
