2025 was an amazing season for the wrestling team. Coached by Wets High Alum Mr. Bravo, one of our English teachers. He also made it to state in wrestling during his time at the West. He recognized and capitalized on many of the wrestlers’ talents. This season had many outstanding wrestlers that made them League champions and got them all the way to regionals*. But one wrestler from the girls’ varsity team went above and beyond, Freshman Jiraeh Faiapau.
I had a chance to interview her on her wrestling journey this season. I asked if she expected to get this far in her first wrestling season, Faiapau said, “Making it to state was not in my bucket list, my bucket list was more like winning some tournaments but not going big, cause it’s freshman year. I would never expect me make it to state, but making it to state this year was crazy, but it was pretty cool too”. For her first year in wrestling, she did an excellent job, but it isn’t just the titles and accomplishments but also all the hard work she put to make it this far.
When I asked her about how her coaches and teammates supported her she explained, “My teammates and coaches supported me throughout the whole time. At the beginning of the season, I was not good but through the season my partner helped me a lot through the season, my coaches, too, giving me pep talks on what I should do and what I should not do.” She puts emphasis on all the help she got throughout the season. With this help, she was able to make it really big in just her first season.
This was Faiapau’s first season so we can expect her to have an astounding wrestling career in the years to come. She is a really hard worker who put a lot of effort into wrestling, and her win is not just a personal win but is a win for West High because she represented our school at such a high level. Faiapau did an outstanding job making it to state this year and so did the whole wrestling team, winning league and making it to regionals.
