Friday night lights are one of West High’s favorite events to go to; students can hang out with friends, enjoy food, watch the game, but our football team’s season has not gone quite as planned. The 2025 season for our football teams have been a struggle for them. The Junior Varsity’s record is set so far to 2-5, while our Varsity’s team record is a scorching 1-6. Most people do not realize what a struggle it is to be out on the field, causing our football players to lack motivation and confidence. I had the chance to interview two players, one on JV and one on Varsity.
I interviewed Sophomore Emron Latifi, and asked, “How do you stay positive and focused on the field when things do not go your way?” He answered, “I just focus on my team and all the things we already accomplish on as in for offense and defense. A way I stay positive is that I know everyone’s doing their job out there and listening to coach.” I then asked Latifi, “Despite the struggles, what gives you hope about the rest of the season?” He replied, “What gives me hope is that we have good coaching. All three of our coaches put in effort and really help the team.”
Next, I got the chance to talk to Senior Ethan Morris, I asked him, “How do you stay positive and focused when results do not go your way?” Morris said, “I look forward to what’s going to come next of our all play’s and hopefully do better.” I then asked, “Despite the struggles, what gives you hope for the rest of the season? “He replied, “What gives me hope is learning from the past, as in our struggles and improving off of that and doing better in the future.” I lastly asked, “What do you think has been the main factor behind the team’s struggle this year?’ He said, “I think effort, showing up and lack of discipline and I feel like the team doesn’t want it that bad.”
Our boys’ football team may be struggling throughout this year’s season, but the players will continue to try to turn things around. Every setback shown throughout the games will be a chance for our team to grow. If our boys’ football team continues to try showing effort, teamwork and to be focused, there is time to finish off strong.
