Varsity girls basketball

Fall is over and here comes winter. You know what that means: It’s basketball season! With an incredible start, the varsity girls basketball team was able to keep a close game until Liberty Ranch ended strong, a score of 31-30, on November 27. Their next game, however, was a different story. At the Tracy Foundation game on November 30, West lost 61-33. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop the girls from practicing their hearts out to achieve their goals. As coach Ron Lovell said, “We need to play at a certain level all the time…so we have to be really clean in all the little things. If we’re not, it’s going to be a long night.”

Every game has its secret to success. Before their games, each and every one of the girls gets especially focused, takes what their coach says and applies it. In a pre-game ritual to prepare herself, senior co-captain Brittney Reyes said, “Music, chill and sleep…eat food…oh my gosh I have to have a banana before every game.”

Over the past few years, the girls have not had their finest seasons. Yet, they kept their heads up. They were ready to take it to another level: playoffs. Reyes said that their coaches are pushing them vigorously this year. They were in it to win it and to ultimately have a winning season. They just needed to get past some of their biggest competitions such as Lodi and Lincoln. Senior co-captain Brenna Claus said, “Honestly, any game we play is a challenge, but we got this.”
