With the Class of 2024’s last year at West High coming to a close, many beloved seniors will be leaving the campus to start a life of their own. Some seniors are going to college, some are heading straight into a new chapter of their life. Senior Delmy Alvarez is starting off her life with a solid future.
This year’s Class of 2024 missed out on one of the most important years of growth: freshman year. This year’s seniors had to learn from home in their first year of high school. Alvarez said, “I think my experience was okay; it was nice being home, but it also made sophomore year feel very abrupt and made high school seem to go by faster.”
During her high school years, Alvarez was a star athlete. She played basketball and volleyball all four years and started track her sophomore year. Alvarez said “Out of all the sports I play, I think basketball is my favorite. Volleyball is a close second, but I love the energy on the court and my support system, as well as the coaches I’ve had are some of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of being around and being coached by.” Throughout Alvarez’s career in sports, she had been a team asset.
Alvarez plans on attending UC Santa Cruz after she graduates from high school. She looks forward to studying her major of psychology. Reflecting on her best times in high school, Alvarez’s favorite time was when she was a sophomore. She says, “It was my first real school year, and it was the year I found all my closest friends and had the most fun.” Alvarez’s favorite part of high school was exploring and learning her calling. She said, “My favorite part of high school was finding myself and what I wanted to be now going to college.” She has been in leadership since her junior year and started this year as an ASB Commissioner of Aesthetic Marketing.
Alvarez was asked what she would say if she was able to go back in time and talk to her freshman self. “I would tell her that everything works out and to trust the process. I feel like I used to stress out so much about what the future held for me but everything turned out so much better than I could have ever imagined.” Alvarez’s journey is an inspiring example of how to live your life to the fullest and make a difference. Merrill F. West High will certainly miss their star scholar athlete, Delmy Alvarez.
