During October 20, 2025, a robbery occurred at the Louvre museum in Paris, in which four thieves executed a heist in just under seven minutes. The robbers used a basket lift to break into the museum, smashing displays cases and stealing jewelry, including items belonging to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
The robbers executed this plan in broad daylight as they were disguised as construction workers. The jewels they stole, valued at around eighty-eight million euros, which is equivalent to one hundred and two million US dollars. Two men were arrested shortly after the heist. One was caught at Charles de Gaulle Airport trying to leave the country, but his DNA was found on one of the getaway scooters. The other was arrested near his home and had prior convictions for robbery.
Five more suspects were arrested on October 29, but for some unknown reason three were released from custody. President Emmanuel Macron stated his opinion on the heist he said, “The theft at the Louvre is an attack on the heritage that is dear to us because it is our history. We will find the works, and those who stole them will be brought to justice. We are doing everything we can, everywhere, to achieve this, under the guidance of the Paris public prosecutor’s office.”
