Inside out 2 is a sequel to the original Inside Out story where a pre-teen girl experiences differences in her emotions (Joy, Disgust, Sadness, Anger, Fear) and starts to build her values based off the core memories that she’s had. Joy and Sadness get lost in her memories and must find a way back to headquarters to save Riley.
Inside out 2 shows Riley now as a teenager with her perfect life, friends, and beliefs, when suddenly four new characters (Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui) arrive and disrupt their peace.
Comparing the numbness that Riley felt in the last movie when Joy and Sadness were lost, this movie tops the last in its relatedness when it comes to Riley getting hit with anxiety so badly that it sends her into a panic attack just trying to fit in with others she looks up to.
Both Joy and Anxiety try to create Riley’s beliefs by using memories they think will make her the perfect person, but soon come to realize that those memories only wreak havoc to Riley’s sense of self. The end of the movie shows how the memories that Riley wants to forget are really the most important to stem what makes Riley’s personality and beliefs.
In my opinion, when it comes to being a teenager at this time, I know that anxiety can kick in quickly. In this day and time, it’s not about just having good grades anymore during high school. It’s about having good grades, wanting to fit in socially, having these opinions about us online that make us feel bad about ourselves, going to college or military, wanting to make our families proud, and so much more. More kids are starting to take therapy because they feel depressed or have panic attacks because of the weight they carry on themselves that they never should’ve had in the first place. This movie shows us the strong emotions that a teen could have and the powerful effects that they have on us. Anxiety is a strong emotion that mostly everyone in the world relates to.
So, do you ever look at someone and wonder, “What is going on inside their head?”
