With the film industry having so many sci-fi space movies, it’s hard to create something that’s unique and memorable. However, Ryan Gosling’s most recent film was able to do just that. Project Hail Mary put us on a ship with Ryland Grace on his journey to save Earth, help an unlikely ally, and remember the events that got him there.
We are introduced to Grace as he wakes from his medically induced coma that allowed him to survive the 12-year trip. He discovers that his two crew members had passed and he couldn’t remember anything, which made them strangers to him. Throughout the film, we are allowed into Grace’s flashbacks, and we learn who he was and how he got there. He was an extremely knowledgeable scientist who decided to become a middle school teacher and after being contacted by NASA scientists, getting roped into Project Hail Mary and an unexpected turn of events, Grace finds himself on a mission to save the world, alone.
Or is he? After the ship’s radar picks up an anomaly, Grace makes a life-changing discovery and a life-long friend. The audience immediately develops a soft spot for this unknown creature, Rocky, as we learn his world is facing the same problem and he’s eager to work with Grace. Their bond is strengthened through near-death experiences and sacrifices made that bring tears to the audience’s eyes.
Although the film is 2 hours and 46 minutes, it doesn’t feel long, rather it allows the plot to properly develop and advance. The characters are strong but complement each other and the tight setting of the film being on the ship also makes viewers feel trapped with Grace and his friend. Overall, it’s a beautiful film about friendship and sacrifice, and how unexpected events can lead you to the life you never knew you could have.
