With the ‘25-’26 school year coming to an end, recognizing the hard work of a student in a program, or even multiple programs, is important. Space and Engineering Academy (SEA) is a program only at West. It consists of scientifically driven classes, many graduation requirements, and a senior year project.
Elizabeth Akomah and Gerardo Garcia, two seniors graduating with SEA, were asked many questions about their journey with SEA. As Akomah reflected back onto her high school career, she was first asked, “How difficult is it to accomplish the SEA requirements?” Akomah responded, “It’s not too difficult to meet the SEA requirements! Some of them, such as the job shadowing and senior service project, were pretty fun to do.” However, Akomah does admit that there are some more difficult requirements. “The require that was the hardest to complete would probably be the senior service project. Even though it was super fun, the project took a lot of time and effort to make it perfect and presentable.” When thinking about her favorite class, Akomah said “My favorite SEA class was probably Advanced English 2 because the class was really fun and Mrs. Jensen was a great teacher!” Her favorite year was freshman year. She said; “All my classes were pretty easy and I had a lot of fun that year.” As a word of advice to her younger SEA members, “work hard all four years and don’t slack off! Even when classes get hard, get help from teachers or classmates and push through!”
Garcia looked back at his high school journey as well, “The SEA requirements are all easy to do as long as you don’t slack off, especially with the community service hours, as getting 80 hours in senior year is something you don’t want to experience.” His hardest requirement being the community service hours, “as procrastination is the death of you when it comes to something as important as that.” Garcia enjoyed any of the SEA English classes, “because that’s where you’re with your people and you can run Brawlstars and play Clash Royal with them all class.” His favorite year regarding SEA requirements and classes goes to senior year. “[A]s at that point, you’ve known the people in your classes for years and every class is basically a group function with your close friends.” As his final remarks,
Garcia said, “My advice to future and current SEA members: with all the requirements needed to stay in SEA, do not procrastinate a single one of them, especially the community service hours.”
Thank you to our SEA seniors and our other hardworking graduates! Your presence here at West High is what makes us “West High Best High!” Your classmates that have been here with you during your high school journey are all supporting you with your entering into adulthood, go make us proud!
