New laws regarding food and selling to students are creating difficulties for clubs to provide fun activities for their members. Clubs are struggling to find ideas and activities for their members to enjoy. Since the start of the 2025-2026 school year, nutrition laws have been a heavy burden, preventing clubs from selling any consumable with “too much sugar.” The presidents of Project Smile and Black Student Union (also called BSU) have expressed to me their feelings about this matter.
Junior Melanie Tapia and president of Project Smile had some concerns. A previous collab with Key Club back in December of 2025 regarding “Hot-Cocoa grams” had been, at first, postponed, then later canceled because of the difficulty from getting the cocoa packets approved and eligible under the new nutrition laws. Tapia said, “Due to the new nutrition guidelines, my club has had to give up some of our ‘student favorite’ fundraisers because our supplies didn’t meet the nutritional requirements. My club has not been able to have a successful fundraiser due to the food restrictions that the school has placed this year.”
Junior Ava Bullock and president of BSU agrees that there is stress the new nutrition laws have caused on her club. BSU is known for selling lemonade at events like Packfest and Springfest. Bullock said, “Sometimes the nutrition rules can make it harder for us to purchase the ingredients we need, especially if healthier versions are not readily available at stores like Walmart, Target, or WinCO.”
How do you feel like you are affected by these new nutrition laws?
