It’s that time of year when food becomes more than food, it becomes a tradition. Everyone has that one special dish that they have been waiting for as soon as December hits. Even though everyone may celebrate Christmas differently, the idea is still the same. Food brings the people together. Around the world, where all is joy, where all dishes are different, but the main part is the same, whether it’s from Christmas cookies to eggnog, or ham or green beans, we all love some amazing food while being with family.
One most popular dish to eat on Christmas is roasted ham or turkey. Many families spend most of their day cooking for everyone so that the main centerpiece of the meal comes out delicious. Smelling the delicious foods walking in through the front door reminds everyone why we get together for Christmas. And the answer is simple, for the food of course. But for others they might not like turkey or ham, maybe they have their own dish they wait all December to eat.
I interviewed senior Marcos Huizar and asked him what his favorite go-to dish is on Christmas? “My go to dish is most definitely pozole, someone in the family always makes pozole and it always comes out amazing.” Pozole is always an amazing holiday dish that Mexican families love to do. With this cold weather we’ve been experiencing a pozole bowl will help you get through this weather. Pozole is a traditional soup primarily made with pork and large kernels of corn. I also asked Huizar what his most overrated dish is for Christmas. “I think sugar cookies are really overrated, you see sugar cookies in almost every birthday party, gathering and special occasions.”
Many dishes don’t need to be extra or too fancy or how they taste, it’s about the memories connected to them. These dishes remind people of family history and the traditions passed down through generations. It shows how different cultures bring their own flavor to the holiday spirit. Whether it’s a small dish or big dish, it’s all about enjoying with the people you most deeply care about.
